6 month baby food | How to Introduce solids to baby

BABY FIRST FOOD AT 6 MONTHS

Hello everyone,  I am Dr Surabhi your pediatrician. Today we will discuss about baby first food at 6 months to 12 months. Till this time baby is feeding mainly on mother's milk but after 6 months they need some nutrition apart from milk.  So today I am going to discuss about 6 months baby food.

  1. Introducing solids to baby ?

  2. What is the correct quantity ?

  3. How we should increase the quantity of food ?

  4. How to introduce different taste to baby ?

  5.  What problems you will undergo during this phase ?

Let us start the discussion.

1. Introducing solids to the baby?

First of all, The main question that comes to our mind is how to start and what should be the baby first food at 6 months, means introducing baby to solids.  My suggestion is to start with cereal grains.  You can start either with wheat or rice. It is better to give Wheat in the form of dalia, suji or oats and give it to the baby in Semi-solid form.

2. What is the correct quantity? (Baby food recipes 6 months)

Sugar should be added in small quantity in food for 6 month old baby.  At the beginning of introducing solids to the baby, start with one or two spoons of food for 1 to 3 days. When the baby would start liking the taste and getting adaptable to it, increase the quantity accordingly. You can increase the quantity from half bowl to full bowl when the child reaches 8 months. ( This is how I advise my patients for introducing baby to solids)

Besides you can give rice (in Semi-solid form), Spinach,  Mashed Apple, Chiku and banana. Please remember whatever food you give to the baby, it should be boiled and mashed and you can give in Puree form. You can mash it with hand after boiling or use mixer grinder if you want a smooth paste. (Baby food recipes 6 months)

Apart from this mother's milk should not stop because it is very important for their overall development as he is not taking food in proper quantity.

After start giving food, you should note if their digestion is ok (loose motions or vomitings) or not or if they are allergic to any food ingredients. Make sure that baby is not getting irritated.

3. How should we increase the quantity of food?

Now we move forward to 8 to 10-month baby food, continue giving the same food but the texture can be changed.  It can be a little bit more of a solid part which will help them as they grow.  By this time try to give them less of mother's milk, start giving them cow milk or toned milk. Try not to give creamy milk as it is difficult to digest.

Now let's come to 10 to 12 months old baby food, by this time some teeth come out and they are a little bit grown up so they can be given solid food like egg,  cottage cheese, biscuit, paneer or chapati dipped in milk.

4. How to introduce different taste to a baby?

Between 6 to 12 months of age, Babies get the knowledge about taste.  Try to give him all types of food may it be vegetarian or non-vegetarian. This way they come across different tastes.  Before giving them food try to introduce one taste at a time. This means when you are giving sweet try to give sweet only.   In case of any salty food introduce only the salty food. One important point to note that baby kidney is not well developed by this time so  Avoid giving more salt and sugar. The main motive of the introduction of food by this age is to make them familiar with the taste, so the quantity of food should be minimal.

“6 months baby food should contain less sugar or salt”

5. What problems will you undergo during this phase?

Taste differs for different babies. some babies like a sweet product while some may like the salty product. In this case, there is no need to worry, give them what they like more but at the same time keep introducing different taste.  In case you find the baby not getting adapted to the food like vomiting or irritation,  then consult a doctor.

“Please do not stop giving mothers milk, besides keep introducing new food to babies.”

  1. Hello ma’am, my baby is 4 months old, she has been exclusively breastfed till now but 3weeks back she suddenly started rejecting breast from waking up till about afternoon and even after that she sucks for only 2 mins(I have strong let down of milk) and as soon as the milk starts to flow heavily she turns her head away and will not suck back at all and keep crying.. I this took as a growth spurt behaviour but she keeps doing the same thing until now.. Since she not taking enough milk from me my breastmilk has reduced a lot and her weight gain has reduced so much. Earlier she was gaining more than 800-900gms each month but this month she has gained only 300gms which is too less. She has little wobbly head when she sits with support otherwise good head control and she has started to roll. I have tried giving nan pro 1 but she is not taking it at all. So one day I gave her a little mashed banana and she seems to like it. Should I start giving her solids? I need your suggestion on this please. Thanks in advance ma’am.

    • You should express some milk in starting which is of heavy flow … May be she doesn’t like that flow coz. It may be obstructing her mouth … When stream of milk get milder then u start feeding her and see the response … Otherwise u can start banana …rice kheer etc….

  2. Hello doctor, my baby girl is 4 months old.. exclusively breastfed. Her birth weight was 3.2 kg and she was gain good weight till 2.5 months of age (5.9 kgs). But suddenly after 3 months of her age she started refusing to take milk from my breast she will keep pushing her head backwards and side to side.. I tried many different positions to feed her but she wouldn’t accept. During her 3.5 month vaccination her weight gain was very low (6.3 kgs). I am worried about her poor weight gain. She is otherwise active and happy, she has started to roll since a week. She looks very keenly when we eat in front of her and makes chewing actions, she is also chewing her fingers and toys with her gums. Is she teething? Shall we start stage1 solids for her? Please reply ma’am, thanks in advance.
